Work on Towers ceased. Never armed. West Martello becomes quarry for Townspeople and target for Fort Taylor gunners.

"CONCH COWBOYS" at West Martello Tower. Cattle shipped from Punta Rassa were unloaded at the foot of Duval Street and herded up the streets. Livestock were then kept in the abandoned West Martello Tower.

The release of all Army properties in Key West. Martello Towers became the property of Monroe County.

West Martello Tower Garden Center declared a National Historic Site by the State of Florida and is now listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
